I think the Catholic Church has long lost any rights on morality. If someone is suffering pain, agony, and misery each and every day of their lives without any way of recovering from it and if they’re of conscious sound, mind, and decision and that’s their choice to see an end to it then that’s their choice to do with their life as they wish. It is an extremely thorough process. My concern is when it comes to mental health patients requesting MAID. I am a psych nurse and often have suicidal patients that request it. So far, we have been lucky and after some time and therapy, they no longer pursued it.

That, however, may not always be the case and it will be interesting to see what is decided. I am referring to patients who have had treatment-resistant depression for years with no hope of them getting better. It’s so tricky as it is life-altering and can cause enormous amounts of suffering yet is not considered to be a terminal illness. There have been cases in the world where people have won the right to die with mental illness. Seen patients suffered from dementia and other degenerative diseases; Same with people who are ill with no chance of getting better and are in a lot of pain.

I believe if they can only go back time and had the chance to die peacefully or to live with the illness, I’m pretty sure they’ll choose to die with dignity. My mother, bedridden, was taken to the hospital 3 times her last 3 years from the nursing home. Each time they pumped her full of drugs & sent her back to the climate-controlled nursing home. She couldn’t eat anything except for baby food. She couldn’t walk, talk, get to the bathroom, bathe, feed herself for her last 3 years. They just soaked her for $$. Finally, she refused to eat & died in 1.5 days.

It was horrible. All she wanted to do was go to Heaven for the last 5 years of her life. I think we should all have that choice w/o starving ourselves to death. Sorry, but sod the Catholic church, they have no more right to meddle in other people’s lives, than those other people would be allowed to meddle in the affairs of the Church. If they think they can lay dictates and demands down, we all need to do the same in return to them. The Catholic Church is the last organization to have anything to say about morals.
